I noticed that I didn’t write a news update about my projects. A crucial element of being a CGI/VFX artist is having a show/demo reel. These days I’m working on my show reel actually (besides a cover design and a web design project for my musician friends).
The computers I’m using are not able to handle natural environments with gazillion polygons nor able to render detailed sci-fi scenes with GI + AO as animation so I realized that I could use the method we used on David Arkenstone‘s El Dorado in 2007. It took some serious time to figure out the approach and learn the necessary software (After Effects in this case). Also choosing the scenes/images I’m going to use, splitting them into optimum amount of layers. Worked on payed projects in the middle of this also.
But when I cleared the ideas in my mind and my approach to the project, everything turned out fine. I always do post work to my 3D renders (adding details, fixing problems ect.) I want them to look great. After FX is letting me to this all in motion. Changed my way to look at the compositing software. When I add the knowledge of compositing multi pass renders with the help of Ergin Kuke‘s After FX tutorials for Gnomon Workshop, I don’t think I’ll need to learn another compositing application. At least for my personal projects.
Adobe really deserves compliments with After FX. While I was searching for tips & tricks and tutorials for the program I’ve found very funny and old conversations on the forums which some people were even clamined that After FX is “not good enough” for professional production workflow.
Professionals my ass…
Well lets face it; it’s all about economics, politics, soccer, tv shows and referendum in my Country. And I don’t know who the hell would ever interest in VFX/CGI in this case. There are people of course – but very few and there’s no VFX Industry here. I think I’ll shoot for the moon but I’m too busy gazing at the stars (Mila Kunis in this case – She was awesome on Book Of Eli)
I don’t think VFX movies will appear on Turkish Cinema Industry for over 5000 years or so. And that Turkish Cinema Industry I’m talking about is dead and stink long time ago. Even if there will be, some “well known” (infamous perhaps) teams and peeps will work on them using only 3ds max with creating all the effects in 2-3 moths LOL.
I used to have some nice e-mail correspondence with Mr. Eric Hanson and he told me that “there’s always room for new talent” while helping me to look for jobs in L.A. That’s totally opposite in my country. People might hate you if you are doing your job too well…
I have a vision, if I get some nice freelance work from dependable companies and make some money to get some nice computers, I want to work on a short film idea I’ve had in mind for a long time. And even planing to attend movie festivals with it.
Okay that’s all folks. Closing the long entry with the screen shot from my lovely After FX. I took it while working on a scene for my show reel.
This is an advertising project I’ve worked over 3 weeks and 18+ hours a day for a company based on India. Final PSD file size was 1gb and there were a lots and lots of layers. Original resolution is 70×50 300dpi. It was nearly impossible to work with that size directly on my PCs so I used area render a lot to split the image in pieces also rendered all the elements separately. Second version is a revision based on client’ requests.
Tools Used: Vue Infinite (environment and rendering) Cinema 4D (modeling and rendering), Poser (human/animal figures), Zbrush (sculpting the islands on the second version – rendered with C4D), Photoshop (compositing, painting, retouching), and of course my tablet, tea/coffee and lots of patience
PSD Info: 8858 x 5906 pixels. 309 layers. 1021.78 mb on file size.
Roof Top Modeling / Texturing Final
Finally finished the modeling and texturing the roof top. That’s entirely based on the roof top environment I’ve modeled for the Superman Web series early on Maya. But in my opinion – because of the robust poly modeling and tools of C4D – I think this version is much better than the one I’ve created with Maya. Also in general I think Cinema 4D is much better than both Maya and Max (at least it is for me).Cinema 4D: Modeling Bodypaint UV Editor: UV Layout Photoshop: Textures
